GET PIC CHURCH EXT https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/166668 Described and illustrated in Roe (1968: [92]-99 and pl. V, XXXVII-XL) as the base of a figural baptismal font dated probably to the 15th or 16th century. [NB: Roe expresses some reluctance to accept the identification by Leask in 1933 of two fragments decorated with angels holding open books as part of the missing basin, although she does accept that it is possible, especially if the missing basin had been made of two separate blocks of stone [bowl and underbowl], like the one at Dunsany [cf. Index entry]]. The remaining base is octagonal with vertical sides that are decorated with an arcade of Ogee arches in which are housed the figures; the spandrils are filled with animal and foliage motifs. Roe (ibid.) identifies the figures thus: 1)Baptism of Christ in the Jordan: Christ and John the Baptist are shown standing up to their knees in the river; Roe notices that both figures are bearded and that John pours the water over Christ's head from a vessel held in both hands; 2)St. Thomas holding a spear; Roe notes that both Thomas and Matthias are usually represented holding spears and bases her choice of Thomas in this case "as the name patron of the several Thomases associated with Rathmore"; 3)archbishop, possibly Thomas à Becket?; 4)Christ showing the five wounds; Roe points out that, although only the hands and chest wounds are vissible now, the ones for the feet must have been painted on earlier; 5-6)St Peter with the keys and St Paul with a sword; 7)abbess, possibly St Brigid?; 8)bishop or abbot, possibly St Patrick, despite the plain, cap-shaped mitre and equally plain walking-stick (Roe, 1968). Described and illustrated in Pike (1989). A catalogue entry in The Hunt Museum [http://test.huntmueseum.com] [accessed 26 December 2006], records "Research materials for 'Irish Medieval Figure Sculpture 1200-1600' (Irish University Press, 1974), by John Hunt Senior, under Ref. HM/ARCH/B2a/00034, and lists a "File of black and white photographs taken at Rathmore church, county Meath. Includes photographs of the font, altar font [...]" Noted and illustrated in the Edwin Rae Collection (TRIARC. TCD) [www.tara.tcd.ie/handle/2262/39781] [accessed 8 June 2014]. TheJournal.ie reported the font stolen [www.thejournal.ie/stolen-sculpture-rathmore-church-meath-908331-May2013/] [accessed 31 May 2013]: "G[ardai are investigating] the theft of a 500-year-old medieval sculpture from the grounds of a church in County Meath. The 'baptismal font' thought to be worth at least half a million euro was taken from Rathmore Church between April 16th and May 10th [...] The octagonal shaped national monument is 2ft high and features carvings of the apostles on each of its eight panels, along with an engraving of the baptism of Christ." The same source [www.thejournal.ie/medieval-font-rathmore-church-912182-May2013/] [accessed 31 May 2013] reported later "Stolen medieval font returned to Meath church. 'There wasn’t a begging ass on the roads of Ireland” that didn’t know the artefact was missing, according to National Museum Of Ireland spokesman.' [...] On Tuesday, TheJournal.ie reported the theft of the 15th century baptismal font, which had been missing for almost a month from the heritage site. However, the national monument, thought to be worth at least half a million euro, was returned to its original position this morning. According to local reports, two jeeps drove into the grounds of the church in the early hours of the morning before a group unloaded the artefact. [...] Gardai confirmed they are continuing to investigate the incident."
