Additional Comments: altered font / re-cut font / painted font (traces all around the basin -- the lower base is modern [cf. FontNotes])
Font Notes:
Described in Osaba y Ruiz de Erenchun (1968). Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_CUEVA_CARDIEL.pdf] [accessed 14 March 2023] as an exceptional baptismal font of the late 12th or early 13th century [long essay with illustrations in the link above]. The origin of this font is not clear, though it is claimed that it used to belong to one of the rural chapels or "ermitas" of the area, a rather unlikely chance given the richness and complexity of the programme. The basin sides have twenty-three arches, under which there is an Annunciation scene, the Apostles headed by Christ and seven prophets with their phylacteries [cf. infra]; the figures have labels with their names, though most are now illegible, some totally erased; there are window-like openings in the spandrels of the arcade. The upper rim of the basin has been re-cut at some point, and has lost its upper part. The base and lower base are circular and of a later date/modern. The inscriptions above the figures on the sides are recorded in the AEHTAM. Banco de Datos de Hispania Tardo Antigua y Medieval [ref.: AEHTAM 1115; IMPB 137; ER II, p. 1243]: "S(an)c(t)e Fil[ipe] / [S(an)c(t)e Berna]be / S(an)c(t)e Toma(s) / S(an)c(t)e Ioh(ann)es / S(an)c(t)e Iacobe / Grabriel Angelus / Ave Maria / S(an)c(tu)s [Pet]rus / S(an)c(t)e Bartolos / S(an)c(t)e Toma(s)", and described as: "Latín. Escritura gótica de transición. Finales del siglo XII - principios del s. XIII; quizá entre los años 1175-1188." The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed March 2023] notes: "La pila, magnífica, es románica con arcos y apostolado completo".
