Baptismal font described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996) as a font of the Romanesque period; the upper rim of the basin is decorated with ball motif [cf. infra]; below it a band of double-thread interlace of lozenge shape; next down is a row of round arches which house human heads and a Greek cross; Bilbao (ibid.) points out that all the carved heads had formerly a painted body added below and there was a painted chalice under the cross; the stem is round and plain but the round lower base is decorated with six female heads and three heads of monsters. Bilbao (ibid.) suggests that the reason for the painted parts on this font may have been pecuniary, therefore relying on a hybrid approach -carving and painting- to cut costs. Described and illustrated in Valle Barreda (2009) who suggests the fonts at Ciadoncha, Mecerreyes and Madrilejo del Monte as being of the same type; VB (ibid.) proposes a date in the late-12th century. The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed March 2023] mentions the church but, uncharacteristically, not the font in it. On-site notes: the outer edge of the rim is ornamented with a rope moulding and the upper rim surface has concentric incisions with beaded tape in between. The crude wooden cover is modern.
