Described in Bilbao (1996), who interprets the incised geometrical pattern as the doors and windows of a Celestial Jerusalem. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ), which notes other square fonts at Castrovido and Valluercanes: "En una capilla lateral del muro norte de la nave se conserva un curioso ejemplar de pila bautismal románica, de copa cuadrada y frentes ornados con simples arquillos dobles y otro central imitando una fuente o puerta, simplemente incisos. Pilas cuadradas las encontramos también en Castrovido y Valluércanes, siendo las dimensiones de ésta 81 cm de lado × 74 cm de altura." The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed March 2023] notes: "ermosa iglesia románica, del siglo XII, dedicada a Santa María [...] El ábside es románico [...] La portada es también románica [...] La pila es cuadrada con decoración lineal (rara e interesante) probablemente prerrománica o visigótica." The square basin rests directly on the ground, without base or plinth. The wooden cover is square, plain and flat, hinged in the middle.
