Church Notes: the church, or 'ermita', as it is referred by some of the locals, is located in the middle of a large dairy farm which folded recently; some repairs and restoration have been done to the church layely [late 1980s or 1990s?]

The entry for this village in Emiliano Nebreda Perdiguero [www.archiburgos.es/wp-content/uploads/amo-a-mi-pueblo.pdf] [accessed March 2023] notes: "Tiene una iglesia de pequeñas proporciones, dedicada al Arcángel San Miguel, que es prácticamente una ermita [...] la pila es románica, historiada, rústica, pero interesante." Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996). The entry for this church in the Enciclopedia del románico [https://www.romanicodigital.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/files/burgos_BASCONCILLOS_DEL_TOZO.pdf] [accessed 10 March 2023] notes: "En el muro del evangelio se encuentra una pila bautismal románica formada por una copa de 115 cm diámetro y 48 de altura, decorada con gallones abrazados a media altura por una cenefa de entrelazo. El pie circular sobre el que se apoya presenta una basa de toro con lengüetas en los ángulos. Desde el punto de vista tipológico y decorativo está directamente emparentada con las pilas bautismales de Barrio Panizares, Arcellares del Tozo y Pedrosa de Valdelucio, esta última posiblemente de la misma mano. Las relaciones constructivas con otros ejemplos de la zona, así como las conexiones iconográficas con la escultura palentina de finales del siglo XII (aunque su resolución y ejecución sea más grosera y popular), nos permite asignar a este edificio y a su pila una cronología tardía que puede rondar las primeras décadas del siglo XIII." Stone font consisting of a roughly hemispheric basin decorated with a running vine around the upper sides, and an arcade of twelve round arches on columns below; inside the arches are [L->R]: Crucifixion; unidentified quadruped rampant facing right; eagle (?) facing right; unidentified quadruped facing inwards; Tree of Life; human demi-figure with crossed arms facing outwards; eagle (?) facing right; lizard-like quadruped with long tail and long snout or beak, rampant to the right [crocodile?]; interlace of snake bodies; trio of snakes; angel holding a cross, wings spread, facing outwards; Tree of Life with two human heads; the stone of the basin is very porous and has traces of paint in several areas; stands on a modern pedestal base. The carving is crude but the programme is interesting, though it does not appear to have an obvious narrative line. No cover present.
