There is an entry in the Domesday survey under "Walsocam" [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF4710/walsoken/] [accessed 29 November 2013], but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Walsoken is dedicated to All-Saints, and has a nave, north and south isle, with a chancel covered with lead; at the west end is a tower, with a spire of free-stone. [...] The font is curiously ornamented with imagery work of many saints, our Saviour's passion, and the seven sacraments of the church of Rome: and round the foot of it,— Remember the soul of S. Honyter and Margaret his wife and John Beforth chaplin." The earliest date noted for this church in Blomefield (ibid.O appears in the list of rectors: "A[nn]o. 14 King John, William de Lutherfield was presented to the rectory, by that King", therefore 1213, but there is one earlier rector mentioned before Lutherfield: "John de More was rector, and by deed sans date received Robert Mautelent into the vicarage of the church of Walsoken"; there is also a mention about the "ancient valor of this church", a portion of which is reported as belonging to Ramsey Abbey "granted by John of Oxford Bishop of Norwich"; since this bishop died in 1200, the original church here was likely12th-century at the latest. The present font is described and illustrated in Paley (1844): octagonal mounted baptismal font of the Seven-Sacrament group, in the late Perpendicular style (the date 1544 is inscribed on the lower base/plinth). The basin sides contain scenes of the seven Sacraments framed in richly crocketed trefoil Ogee arches. Noted in Brendan (1849). Noted in The Ecclesiologist (XXVIII, 1867: 4-5). Noted in Didron (1859) probably after Paley. In Romilly Allen (1888). In James (1930). Studied in detail in Nichols (1994), who lists the scenes as: 1)Baptism; 2)Confirmation; 3)Penance; 4)Eucharist; 5)Holy Orders; 6)Marriage; 7)Extreme Unction; 8)Crucifixion. The underbowl has angels, some praying, some with scrolls. The base has crocketed Ogee arches with triquetra motif in the spandrels; inside the arches stand figures, of which Paley (1844) identifies St. John, St. Margaret and St. Paul, with a black-letter legend running around the shaft right under them. Another inscription, this one giving the date of the font, runs along the sides of the octagonal plinth [cf. Inscriptions area], and there are shields at each angle with instruments of the Passion. Noted in Cautley (1949). Jenkins (1999) describes this font as "spectacular." Hutton (1957) mentions scenes of the "Crucifixion and Absolution" on the basin sides and the inscription "Remember the souls of S. Honyter and Margaret his wife, and John Beforth, Chaplain 1544" [not an exact transliteration] and emblems on the lower base. One of the inscriptions is also given in Cox & Harvey (1907). Illustrated in Crossley (1941). Pevsner & Wilson (1997) note a 19th-century marble copy of this font at Glandale St. Martin's. Described and illustrated in Pevsner & Wilson (1999). Fully illustrated in Knott (2005) who identifies the figures on the stem as saints John the Baptist, Dorothy, Peter, Catherine, Paul, Stephen and Mary of Magdala. A copy of this font was made ca.1900 to be installed in the restored church of Glandford (Nrflk.)
