Church Notes: present church replaced a medieval one of which only the cemetery and the apse of the old parish church remain standing; it was dedicated to St Mary -- the font and some other remains were re-used in the replacement church -- detailed essay on the old church by Carmen Baena Yerón in http://www.arquivoltas.com/15-Burgos/02-BarcenaDePienza.htm [accessed 28 December 2020]
Noted in Bilbao (1996) as a baptismal font of the Romanesque period. Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002-) as a Romanesque baptismal font made of a fine-grained sandstone, and originally from the old church. The bucket-shaped basin is decorated with a roll moulding in the outer side of the upper rim, while the upper surface of the rim has two incised lines all around between which stick out the two iron staples of the old font cover; on the front side of the basin is a processional cross; the font is located in the sacristy, cemented to the corner as sometimes happens with fonts in the north of Spain. Although there is some damage to the upper rim, the sides and the lower rim, the font is in a reasonable state of conservation. No cover present. [NB: the font is originally from medieval parish church of which only the cemetery and the apse of the old church remain; it was dedicated to St Mary
