Noted and illustrated in Waymarking [https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMZ8BD_Baptismal_font_Aachen_Cathedral_Aachen_NRW_Germany] [accessed 10 March 2023]: a font made of Namur limestone and dated to the late 12th century (except for the base); the brass cover being from 1696; the same source notes that excavations in 1987/1988 discovered fragments of a bluestone font buried in the Johanneskapelle. After several moves the font was installed in the Karlskapelle in 2014. The baptismal font consists of a cylindrical basin decorated with four human heads set at 90-degree angles; between the heads are large foliage motifs [are they the extended wings of the heads?] the underbowl appears to have several (6?/ 8?) mouldings that may have topped colonnettes around a broad central shaft, but nly the latter remains; the present lower base is hexagonal and moulded, obviously a later addition or replacement. As indicated above, the brass cover is late-17th century.
