Church Notes: church originally mid-12thC (consecration date 1156); was noted as 'abacial' before the 15thC
Described and illustrated in the Catálogo Monumental de Navarra (1990?-) as a Gothic baptismal font from the same date as some of the reliefs on the façade [i.e., 14th century]. Described and illustrated in Domeño (1992) and (1990): tub-shaped baptismal font of the 14th century; the basin is round and has an arcade of round arches all around; in the arches appear [L->R]: 1)male figure with instrument; 2)male figure with pouch in his hand; 3)tonsured cleric holding a book; 4)woman with bottle or apple (Eve?) (?); 5)Madonna and Child; 6)female figure with dish (Mary Magdalen?); some of the spandrels of the arcade are ornamented with palmettes and rosettes. The Enciclopedia del románico en Navarra (2008) declares it unique in Navarra for its iconographical programme and its design, and suggests a date in the 13th century for this font based on the vestments and on the similarities of the arcade with that in Santa María de Sangüesa. This same source notes that the side of the font that faces the corner is not decorated, and that the font was unearthed during excavations in 1977. [NB: one ought to keep in mind Francis Bond's rule about always dating an object to its latest cronological reference, not the earlier ones].
