Aldaz de Larraun / Aldatz

Listed, described and illustrated in the Catálogo monumental de Navarra (1990?-, vol. V**: 203-206 and plate 188 ); it is a chalice-shaped baptismal font, with a hemispherical basin ornamented with broad ribs; the base is capital-shaped, square at the top and bottom, with animal (?) heads at the corners and at the lower base, where it has a large round moulding and half-ball motifs; the stem in between the two square-shaped parts is round with a thin double moulding on the upper half. The CMdeN (ibid., p. 204) places a font under the choir of the "new church" [i.e., the one built in 1829] and another in the chancel; the reference to the date is confusing since in the following page (p. 205) a mention is made of a holy-water stoup of red marble made in 1829 and located in the south side, as well as of a beautiful baptismal font of the medieval period from the old church. The font beneath the west gallery is obviously a newer one in red marble matching the 1829 holy-water stoup, whereas the one in the chancel is the one illustrated in plate 188 and dated to the 13th century.
