Church Notes: "One of the best preserved medieval timber curches in Sweden, with paintings dated 1323 and 1494". (Lagerlöf, 1985, p. 259) -- church believed to have been built between 1310 and 1323; mural paintings are from 1323 (choir) and 1494 by mäster Amund; detached bell-cote demolished mid-19thC; church destroyed by arson in 2001; under reconstruction since 2007 using medieval methods
Montelius & Brusewitz (1878) illustrate a baptismal scene drawing after one of the wall paintings in this church, but do not show the actual font in this church [NB: there were two sets of mural paintings here: the choir paintings, said to be 14th-century, and the rest, of 1494, attributed to mäster Amund. All of them were destroyed in the arson fire of 2001, as was the font]. An illustration of the interior of this magnificent wooden church can be found in Hildebrand (1907: fig. 192) and in Lagerlöf (1985: fig. 253 on p. 203). In Hallbäck (1965). The baptismal font consists of a quasi-cylindrical basin that appears to have a saw-tooth pattern all around; the pedestal base is cylindrical, adorned with a single roll moulding; the lower base appears to have zigzag ornamentationt, perhaps of the same date as the church itself [paintings dated 1323 and 1494]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 940613F1] as a Dalslandsgruppen baptismal font made of soapstone in the 13th century. The www.sodraradagamlakyrka.se web site notes that a stone font existed here before the 2001 arson fire that destroyed it and the church itself; the old font was made of Norwegian soapstone in the 13th century, that is, earlier than the 14th-century original church building, which may have indicated an earlier church had existed here; the font broke into pieces during the 2001 fire [="Dopfunten. Ett av kyrkans största mysterier var den gamla dopfunten från 1200-talet som var huggen i norsk täljsten. En dopfunt som egentligen inte borde ha funnits i en yngre 1300-tals kyrka. Dopfunten krackelerade och föll sönder av elden, men den hade redan spelat en central roll genom att peka på möjligheten att den en gång tillhört en äldre kyrka på platsen"]. The font consisted of a roughly cylindrical basin with a saw-tooth pattern just below the upper rim; on a cylindrical stem with a single roll moulding on it, and a round splaying lower base that appears to have had a foliated (?) pattern around the top surface. [NB: he last photographs of the font on site we have had access to, of May 1994, show the font at the east end, just in front of the altar -- reports of the destruction in 2001 [cf. supra] indicate the font was kroken into pieces; it is not clear yet whether the on-going reconstruction of the church will attempt to include the old font].
