view of church interior - looking west

Scene Description: Source caption: "Interiör mot väster. Efter restaureringen." Although the photograph is undated, it was likely taken in the late-1930s or later, as the font in the photograph was made in the 1930s by Gustav Berg, of nearby Rackey. The photographer, Karl Axel Forssén (1888-1961) was an architect involved in many church restorations.

Church Notes: 12thC church; modified 14thC; renovated late-19thC; belfry late-18thC
Font Notes:
Present font in this church is modern, made in the 1930s by Gustaf Berg, of nearby Rackeby. The medieval font is noted in Ernst Fischer's Västergötland (Bd 1 H. 1, Kyrkor i Kållands härad : norra delen, 1913) and in Sveriges kyrkor. Noted in Roosval (1917) and Hallbäck (1971). That font was moved to the Statens Historiska museum in Stockholm and is noted and illustrated in the SHM’s Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 951014F1] as a Skaragruppen baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century [NB: the entry in the SHM inventory has an interesting note on the interpretation/identification of the programme on this basin: "cuppans bildscener är ovanliga och svårtolkade, nedanstående motivbestämningar är därför högst hypotetiska; SHM gjorde 1993 under ledning av utställningschef Lars Andersson en rekonstruktion av funtens polykromi - resultatet avslöjar mer om SHM än om medeltida praxis"]. Described and illustrated in Dahlberg (1998: 115ff) as a cylindrical mounted font of the Middle Ages, one of a group to which Dahkberg adds the fonts at Dala, Eggby, Häggesled, Kinne-Vedum No.1 and No.2, Kållands-Åsaka, Kvänum, Medelplana, Sil and Skånings-Åsaka. Described in Nordström (1984: 157:n164). The basin sides include a scene of the Majestas Domini charging Peter with the keys in the presence of a kneeling angel, and by St. Michael with the scale, a Temptation and Fall scene with the serpent coiled on a tree, a possible animal sacrifice scene, a cleric -probably a bishop or abbot- with a large baculum blessing a large elegant figure bending down his head, a pattern of up-and-down palm leaves [fan palmettes] between rope motifs, like those at the Kållands-Åsaka font, but smaller and with only one bunch of fruit. The base, a round pedestal ornamented with two roll mouldings (and cracked on at least one of the sides), is almost identical to the one at the Kållands-Åsaka font. [NB: this type of low-relief busy-scene ornamentation of the basin is found also on baptismal fonts on both sides of the Pyrénées, in Catalonian and Occitan villages of the former diocese of Comminges, Navarre, etc.]
