Church Notes: present church 17thC built on the site of an earlier (Romanesque) church
Illustrated in Calderón Escalada (1971: p. opp. 41) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the Romanesque period. The basin is long and bucket-shaped, with multiple mouldings that alternate between rope and roll; it is raised on a short prismatic base. Described in Garcia Guinea (1979: 290) and (1996: 58): several mouldings of different types all down to the base and a deep scotia; saw-tooth motif at the top, and tiny arches at the lower part. There are six Maltese crosses inscribed in circles on the basin sides, just below the uper rim; the saw-tooth motif mentioned in GG above are just scratched or incised between the crosses, unlikely to have been done at the time of the crosses or the rest of the carvings on the font. The wooden cover is round, flat and plain; it appears modern. The entry for this church in Románico Digital [www.romanicodigital.com/el-romanico/rutas/romanico-valle-valderredible-cantabria] [accessed 20 February 2021] reports: "Iglesia parroquial de San Millán. [NB: there is a rock church nearby known locally by different names: Ermita de San Miguel / Santa Eulalia / San Millán, said to be dated between the 8th and 9th centuries.
