Font Notes:
Described in Quirino Fernández (1768?) as a baptismal font "crudely carved by a local artisan, and richly decorated with a whole world of liturgical as well as profane motifs, the 'ghost' of the old Romanesque style; its relieves, organised on two registers, transcribe nothing less than the difficult theme of life and death" [our translation -- original text appears reproduced in: www.mundofree.com/guardo/]. Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996). An interesting interpretation is offered by López ([s.d.]) in www.alpoma.net/guardoweb/pila.html. The basin has a busy decoration with two main registers, upper and lower, and many elements framed by the irregular arches: a cockerel, a centaur, winged beasts, a scene of the Resurrection of the Souls, another of the Last Judgement?, an armed warrior, quadrupeds, a fornication/sodomy (?) scene, etc. Noted and illustrated in García Guinea (1998), who describes its dating as uncertain, with a certain Gothic air ["cronología bastante incierta, aunque tiene cierto aire de goticismo"]. In the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002-), where it is described as an enigmatic piece ["no es una pieza novedosa [...] aunque sí resulta enigmática"] and dated to the late 12th or early 13th century. Noted in Martín Jiménez (2008).
