animal - bird - dove - 2 - facing each other - eating acanthus fruit, arum or grapes?

Scene Description: on one of the sides of the basin -- the bird on the left has plumage carved in great detail, like the ones on the font at Gentinnes, but the bird on the right has detail only on the visible wing and tail; a lovely flower [or is it a chick ["oisillon"], as suggested in Ghislain (2009?] is placed above, in the spandrel created by the birds' heads; the bunch of fruit resembles more the arum frit of the acanthus than a bunch of grapes, but this may be stylised way of portraying grapes in the fonts of the Namurois

Noted in Van de Casteele (1877). Included by Cloquet (1890 and 1895) among the round Mosan-type fonts with four heads at 90-degree angles on the basin. Same description in Enlart (1902), although in a later reference he describes it as Tournai with a five-column base. Described and illustrated in Ronse (1929). Pudelko's illustration (1932) matches the previous descriptions and shows one of the basin sides with two doves which have their beaks in a pommegranate (?); the heads at the basin corners appear rather hieratic; the columns of the base are plain as is the lower base and round plinth. Bond (1908) lists it among the Tournai fonts, using Enlart as source. In Ghislain (1986). Described and illustrated in Drake (2002). Catalogued and illustrated in Ghislain (2009) as a baptismal font of the Namurois group, filiation de Saint-Séverin-en-Condroz, made of limestone (calcaire de Meuse) ca. 1160, remarking on the similarities with the fragment at Ohey, as well as the fonts at Flostoy, Bléhen, Gerpinnes, Saint-Séverin-en-Condroz, Saint-Nicolas-en-Glain, Wellin and Bastogne; Ghislain (209) notes that the central shaft and probably the outer colonnettes as well are modern replacements of the originals. The font consists of a roughly cylindrical basin with salient heads at 90-degrees; the sides in between are decorated with 1)blind arcade, 2)palmette vine; 3)blind arcade; 4)facing doves eating from a bunch of arum or grapes suspended in the air; the base consists of a broad central shaft and four detached outer colonnettes with base mouldings that nake up the lower base together with the moulding of the central shaft. In 1973 the font was located at the northwest end of the nave, beneath the gallery. In the 1990s renovation of the church the font was moved to the centre aisle, still at the west end of the nave; the old wooden cover is no longer on it.
