Cognate Fonts: The font at Brandstad, also in the Lund area, about 30 km away, has very similar design and imagery but the quality of its workmanship is markedly inferior
Church Notes: 12thC(?) church; totally re-built 1862 [only the lower part of the tower remains from the original building]
Noted with an illustration in Brunius (1850). Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921: 50 and pl. XVII: 3,4). Baptismal font of the 12th century, similar in shape and design, as well as in the ornamental motifs, to the one at Brandstad [cf. Index entry]. The font at Örtofta, however, is of a much better quality all over, especially in the execution of the imagery, to the extent that the former looks like a poor copy of the latter. The sides of the cylindrical basin are framed by a rope motif at top and bottom; between them, beautiful palmettes and acanthus leaves forming circles; the spandrels between the circles are also ornamented with plants and leaves. The base has number of human and animal carvings. Noted in Rydbeck (1936) in her section on the 'Mårten" master. Carlsson (1976: 92) identifies "a bear pulling his tongue" and describes the carving and its probable symbolism: "the character of the bear is marked by its fur-coat and square-cut nose. The upper part of the bear emerges from the lower torus of a classical base and pulls its tongue with both its paws. This motif is probably another form of bridling like pulling the cheeks, the moustache, the beard, etc. The brigdling usually had the meaning of restraint of sexuality or anger and this may also be illustrated in Örtofta as the bear is a well-known symbol for these vices" (ibid., p. 141); he describes the gouping on the base as "a ram's head [...] combined with three other motifs such as an embracing couple, a bear and a bicorporate lion with a prey." (Ibid., p. 136). Carlsson's identification matches the earlier one in Tynell [cf. supra], although the latter describes the bear simply as the head of a wild animal ["vädurshufvud"]. In one of Tynell's illustrations (ibid.) the font has a plain wooden cover on the basin. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900621F2] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century by 'Mårten'. No cover present. Baptismal dish made of brass in the first half of the 17th century decorated with a running deer(?) in the centre, and foliage and fruit all around it. Described and illustrated in the entry for this church in Svenska kyrkan [ww.svenskakyrkan.se/filer/Örtofta kyrka.pdf] [accessed 27 August 2021].
