Cognate Fonts: related to the font at Saxtorp
Church Notes: late-12thC(?) church; modified late-13thC; modified with tower re-built 19thC; 13th and 15thC mural paintings uncovered;
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921) who gives the date in the late-13th century. Described in Rydbeck (1936: 144, 146ff, 153 et al.) as a baptismal font by the "Mästaren från Soest". Also noted in Thümmler (1971: 65 [85?]). The font has a square basin with large angels at the angles; each appears to be holding a book and its open wings spread over to the sides of the basin providing ornamentation for that area. Liepe and Edenheim, in Sveriges kyrkor: Skåne (Bd. I, hft. 3: 229/240) suggest that the figures are probably, the the four evangelists, although the figures are clearly angels holding books and there is no trace of any added symbolism to support the claim. This same source identifies this font as the only one of its kind in Skåne, the work of a mason from Soest who worked in Lund cathedral (after M. Rydbeck). The font has been considered to be related to the font at Saxtorp [cf. corresponding Index entry]. The base, somewhat of a mismatch, has a large upper ring, plain, and another smaller one below, tightening the base to the shape of a spindle with fluted motif. The whole is raised on a square plinth or lower base, totally plain. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900620F3] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century; the SHM entry notes Rydbeck's attribution [cf. supra] but does not endorse it. [NB: the design of the basin is suspiciously similar to the style of English font produced in East Anglia in the late medieval period; was it inspired by them? -- in which case the dating in the Swedish source would way off the mark; also suggesting a later period is the fluted pattern of the pedestal base, even if it may not have been the original to match the basin]. . No cover present. Late-17th century baptismal dish of brass.
