There are two entries for this Fakenham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TF9129/fakenham/] [accessed 17 October 2015]; it mentions a church and "0.06 church lands" in it. Baptismal font noted in Gough (1792), ornamented "with the emblems of the Trinity, Passion, and Evangelists, and in the lower compartments an N ducally crowned." Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is a regular large pile, having a nave, a north and south isle, covered with lead, and a chancel covered with tiles; at the west a tower with 6 bells, and is dedicated to St. Peter [...] Round the cover of the font is; 'Orate pro aia. Ade Plowryte, et Alicie uxoris ejus, et omnium benefactor. suor. qui istud opus fieri fecerunt in honore Dei omnipotentis. Amen.' On the 8 sides of the stone bason or font are several religious emblems, viz. of an angel, ox, lion, and eagle, to represent the 4 Evangelists; also that of the Trinity, a cross, crown of thorns, the King's arms; also on the pillar of it, the letter H, or L, in an old character, and a crown over it, to represent it as being in the dutchy of Lancaster, or built in King Henry the VIth's reign." The font is described and illustrated in Paley (1844) as an octagonal mounted font of the late 14th or 15th century in the Perpendicular style; four of the sides of the octagonal basin have the symbols of the four Evangelists; the other four have the Instruments of the Passion as well as heraldic shields with the arms of John of Gaunt, who died in 1399; the stem of the base has "arched panels on the sides, which are filled with shields of arms and ciphers, surmounted with crowns." Noted in Bloxham (1859). Farrer (1887 [1885?]) notes: "Carved Shield on the Font. XVII. Quarterly: — 1 and 4, France (modem); 2 and 3, England." [NB: other identifications a/p Bond (1908) and Cox & Harvey (1907)]. Described in Pevsner & Wiilson (1997), who note the crowned letters on the stem; also shields with the symbol of the Trinity, Instruments of the Passion, etc. on the basin sides. NB: oneof the basin panels appears to be totally blank.
