The cathedral site [https://cattedralediferrara.it/cappella-del-battistero/] [accessed 15 February 2023] descrbes the monolithic marble font attributed to master Nicholaus: "La singolare vasca battesimale, su cui si vede I’Agnello vessillifero insegna del Capitolo Metropolitano, è stata recentemente attribuita a Nicholaus. Le fonti storiche dicono che sopra questa vasca si trovava un Cristo benedicente in marmo, attribuito ad una Maestranza campionese della metà del XIII secolo. La scultura, oggi conservata nel Museo della Cattedrale, sarebbe stata tolta nel 1735, quando si fece al battistero un coperchio in legno di noce. […] singolare vasca battesimale, scavata in un unico blocco di marmo a otto lati, considerata dalla critica lavoro di una maestranza campionese attiva a Ferrara intorno alla metà del Duecento, ma recentemente attribuita a Nicholaus. Realizzato su modelli bizantini del V-VI secolo, all’interno di ogni specchiatura incorniciata da solide modanature, il bassorilievo dal modellato rigido e stilizzato, mostra ornamentazioni di tipo vegetale e animale, tra cui spicca l’Agnello vessillifero. Il coperchio in legno è stato fatto nel 1735 da Giovanni Benetti, quando la vasca cominciò ad essere usata come fonte battesimale. Sulle pareti ai lati della struttura marmorea, si vedono affrescati due episodi ispirati al sacramento del battesimo, relativi alla vita di due santi missionari: a destra, San Pietro Claver. battezza gli schiavi negri evangelizzati; a sinistra, San Francesco Saverio, gesuita noto come “apostolo delle Indie”, battezza un neofita."
