Enlart (1902) identifies the four figures as "les quatre Éléments, accompagnés d'animaux attribuits (dragon, oiseau, poisson, lion)". Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: APMH00079815]. Described and illustrated in Oursel (1904: 232 and pl. 102), who suggests a mid-12th century date. The MÉMOIRES DU CANTON DE MARQUISE [cf. web site] shows images of the font in the early days in the museum. On-site notes: rounded baptismal font made of Marquise limestone and located now in the museum in Boulogne-sur-Mer is originally from the parish church at Wierre Effroy. It is deeply carved in a strong Norman style and has four figures at the corners, their heads now broken off; in between the figures, large animals; the rim has a broad band of zig-zag with vegetal/plant motifs in the angles. The overall program is very Norman: figure 1): a bishop, his right hand raised in benediction, his left holds staff; the basin side has a lion with a bird on its back; fig. 2): a robed human figure with long, curly hair (Samson?), appears to hold the head of a serpent; the basin side has a dragon; fig. 3): human figure has hooded garment (monk?); his right hand holds the tail of a dragon, the left hand, its wings; the basin side has a dragon with a fish tail; fig. 4): robed human figure with long hair, holding the wings of a griffin; the basin side has a griffin.
