Font Notes:
This is probably the font noted in Bourricaud (1880) as very interesting and deserving further study [NB: Bourricaud (ibid) names the place simply as 'Brives', but it is in the context of a group of other very interesting fonts in the area]. As reported in Crozet (1962) and (1971), the font at Brives-sur-Charente is a rectangular -quasi square- unmounted monolith located against the walls, which impedes the proper reading of all its sides; Crozet reads them as follows: east side: Ascension of Christ in a mandorla held by the four symbols of the Evangelists in the centre; a horizontal line divides the rest into four parts which contain 3 Apostles each (Peter, Paul and Barnabas, on the right, James and Philip on the left, are all identified by parts of the surviving inscription on the bands). In the south side Crozet describes a Harrowing of Hell scene with Christ in a mandorla with a bird and a lion on the sides; below, angels hold back a crowd of figures which include demons as well as Adam, Eve and other humans. The West side is totally hidden against the wall. The North side, according to Crozet, has a winged angel, one wing up and one down; his left hand awkwardly behind his back while the right hand holds forth a disc which he appears to offer to the two haloed figures who stand before him: the first appears male and holds a staff on which a bird is perched; the second appears female and holds her right hand on her belly while the left hand rests on her face in a gesture of sadness or humility (Crozet, 1962) and (1971). The entry for this church in Le Patrimoine de Cognac [https://photocognac.com/a-voir-pres-de-cognac/brives-sur-charente/] [accessed 3 November 2018] notes: "L’église Saint-Étienne de Brives-sur-Charente est récente. The book Authorities in the Middle Ages: Influence, Legitimacy, and Power in Medieval [...] [ed. by Sini Kangas, Mia Korpiola, Tuija Ainonen (Berlin: De Gruyter, 2013): 93, 96 notes: "Sadly the Brives font is badly damaged and is only partially visible, being cemented into the wall of the nineteenth century church"; this same source mentions the dove on Christ's shoulder motif on the Brives font". The plan culminated in Mariane Bouhourd's 'mémoire' (2023) [https://mediatheque-numerique.inp.fr/documentation-oeuvres/memoires-diplome-restaurateurs-patrimoine/daigues-je-nais-dalgues-je-meurs-etude-conservation-restauration-fonts-baptismaux-histories-xiie-siecle-brives-sur-charente-eglise] [accessed 17 April 2024]
