Church Notes: church ca. 1150; modified 17thC, 1858
Noted in De Bruyn (1869). A square (trapezoidal) basin mounted on a columnar base is identified by Jansen (1964) as Mosan art; the font has an abacus-like upper rim with an inscription (identifying the scenes?) now pratically illegible; the basin is broken in several places with chunks missing; it has a very original iconographic program on the side: 1) a figure on the left sitting on an lion has the right hand raised; a male bearded figure and a female appearing at the centre handing over a small church building to the haloed figure on the right (Jansen's identification: "Le seigneur de Wilderen et son épouse, présentés par leur saint patron, offrent une maquette de leur église au Christ"; 2) two figures, haloed (Jansen identifies as Evangelists, as does Enlart), [the Museum label identifies them as Mark and Luke] sitting on animals and writing on small desks/lecterns; between them, a tree/plant with three branches/flowers. 3) Jansen identifies this scene as St. Peter holding the keys and St. Paul with an open book, with Christ in the upper centre part in a hemispheric nimbus, right hand raised in benediction; 4) haloed figure on the right sits on animal and has the face turned to the viewer and down; its left hand appears to hold its head while the right appears to hold a long scroll; to its right, another haloed figure, male and bearded looks to the first figure; at the right, a cleric/monk sits on an animal and writes on a desk/lectern (Jansen identifies as two Evangelists, one of whom evades the sight of the Lord who appears to them) [the Museum label identifies them as Matthew and John]. The basin has at least one capital-like top for a column at a corner, indicating that the original base may have been either four nonconstructional columns or that plus a broader central one which appears to remain. The original basin is now [April 2010] displayed in the Musées royaux d'art et d'histoire de Bruxelles / Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis - Brussel, mounted on a broad circular pedestal replacement base; the font, [nv. 870] is labelled as belonging to a Liège workshop ca. 155-1165, originally from the Eglise Notre-Dame de Wilderen / Onze-Lieve-Vrouwewerk van Wilderen, Sint-Truiden; the stone is identified as "grés houiller", i.e., a carboniferous sandstone [Kohlensandstein]. The entry for this church in BALaT KIK-IRPA [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/76256] [accessed 17 April 2024] lists and illustrates only a tiny brass font of the late-19th century.
