Lübke (1870) notes an octagonal font in this church. Described in Favreau (1985): "Fonts baptismaux de la cathédrale de Merseburg, où sont representés apôtres, prophètes et fleuves du paradis" [=baptismal font at Merseburg cathedral, on which are represented apostles, prophets and the rivers of Paradise], plus an inscription. The reference from the Index of Christian Index shows the figures of two of the prophets, Esdras and Malachias, identified by the text on the banners they hold (Hamnn, 1922-1923). Described and illustrated in Carlsson (1976): "The baptismal font of Merseburg, dated around 1180, is now standing in the western entrance of the cathedral but was brought here in 1831 from the church of St. Thomas in the same city [...]. It is hewn from one block of reddish sandstone and is octogonal in shape. It consists of two parts; the upper one with the bowl has sixteen prophets with scrolls in their hands and carrying diminutive apostles on their shoulders. The lower part has four lions carrying the bowl on their backs. They are placed on every second side of the octogon while the other four sides are occupied by the four rivers of paradise in the form of four men with water-flowing urns." [NB: the date of the move was 1730-1731; St. Thomas' was demolished in 1831]. Catalogued and illustrated in Forster (2008) with date ca. 1180 [pre-1177?] and suggests the identification of the kneeling figure as the abbot of the Benedictine abbey of St. Peter. Described and illustrated in Forster (2008).
On-site notes: the stone has a strong reddish hue; there is some damage to the upper rim; the present cover is modern, of wood.
