Noted and illustrated in Cahiers d'archéologie d'Alsace, VII (1935-1938). Corblet (1881-1882) mentions a font in "Nueviller, Alsace" but he attributes it to the "ép[oque]. ogiv[ale]." Le Patrimoine des communes du Bas-Rhin (1999) includes the church but does not mention this font. Noted and illustrated in Braun (2010), who dates the font to the late-12th or early-13th century, and notes that the three sculpted figures were the original rests of the basin, the two-step plinth added at a later date. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM67000196 and IM67014350] with date ca. 1200:
"Fonts baptismaux datables autour de 1200. L'arrière-train des 3 figures qui supportaient la cuve, primitivement dégagé, a été caché par la maçonnerie ajoutée à la base de la cuve et par deux degrés placés sur le pourtour, rénovations qui pourraient remonter à la campagne de travaux menée par l'architecte Boeswilwald. Le récipient interne est plus récent, le couvercle moderne." On-site notes: baptismal font consisting of a cylindrical basin decorated with a well-rendered blind arcade of double-curve arches on the sides; it is raised on a two-step plinth [cf. supra], the upper step opened to accommodate three protomes/busts which adorn the lower part of the font [cf. supra]: 1)hooded and bearded male figure, perhaps a monk; 2)a seated lion holds a human head in its mouth; 3)an animal-looking figure holding a human head between its legs [NB: Braun (ibid.) identifies it a fabulous creature, the animal body complemented with a female head, its hair combed, a veil with pleats hanging down on the sides in pleats; the head it holds in its legs is human and has an open mouth. This is a finely executed work.
