The baptistery of Pisa was started in 1152, but finished about a century later by Giovanni and Nicola Pisano. The octagonal font made of inlaid marble is dated to 1246, the work of Guido da Como, aka Guido Bigarelli. Eartly illustration of the font in Martini (1705). Also in Ramèe (1847-1867) and in Rohault de Fleury (1866). Described and illustrated in Gailhabaud (1850). Plan of the baptistery in Corblet (1881). Bond (1908) describes the "eight small barrels of stone, each 17 inches in diameter. Webb says they were employed for the baptism of infants, and that the rest of the tank was for adults." Very detailed study with many illustrations in Annarosa Garzelli's work of 2002; contains ample bibliography, especially earlier works and references.
