Listed, described and illustrated in Cahn (1979-) as a work of doubtful authenticity previously classified as Romanesque, but likely to be a more recent creation "in the opinion of the authors of this catalogue" (Cahn, 1979- , v. 2: 250). The object is a limestone beaker-like vessel which appears to have lost its upper rim; the remaining basin sides show four circles with a symbol of an Evangelist in each; in the space between the circles there is an angel, full-front, showing its wings, its hands holding the circles in the manner of a Majestas Domini mandorla angel. The underbowl has diagonal rib-like motif and there is a torus as base. Cahn (ibid.) gives the provenance as Stefano Bardini; it was purchased from J. Brummer in 1949 [cf. entry for Wadsworth Atheneum No. 1, of the same provenance]. Cahn (1971) suggests date ca. 1200.
