A tub-shaped sandstone font probably from the 12th or 13th century; the basin sides have faint niches in which stand the individual figures; scene of Baptism identified in the Index of Christian Art (Index of Christian Art, [s.d.]). Some of the figures have scrolls with inscriptions [is this an error of transposition with the font at the nearby cathedral? -- to be documented]. The present font in this church is modern and very interesting, as it must ba inspired by the Seven-Sacrament fonts of the English Perpendicular period; it has a wooden basin of octagonal shape, the panels decorated with the Seven Sacraments, and the Baptism of Christ in the eighth; there is a metal insert or lining to hold the baptismal water; the pedestal base is decorated with varied tracery patterns on the sides, one containing a human head, and it has one side which shows the interior is hollow, locked with a metal door; the lower base are also octagonal but made of stone; the wooden cover is octagonal, flat and plain. [NB THERE IS AN IDENTICAL WOODEN FONT AT BAMBERG [at the Obere Pfarrkirche zu Unserer Lieben Frau], BUT THE LATTER APPEARS TO BE AN ORIGINAL OF THE 16THC; IS THIS A COPY? -- SEE INDEX ENTRY FOR BAMBERG No. 2]
