Country Name: Sweden
Location: Medelpad, Västernorrland
Directions to Site: Located off (S) the E14 highway, in the municip[ality of Ånge, W of Sundsvall
Ecclesiastic Region: Härnösands stift
Historical Region: Medelpad, Västernorrlands län
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in the chancel, on the south side.
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Sighraf / Sighrafr / Sigraf
Church Notes: The old wooden church of the 12thC was demolished in 1782; replaced by a stone church completed in 1785
Noted in Roosval (1914) and in Cornell (1918). Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Medelpad (Bd. I, hft. 2: 369, 370, 378) as a sandstone cylindrical mounted baptismal font by the Sighraf workshop of Gotland and dated to the 12th century (Roosval dating); it bears figural ornamentation whose identification is made harder by the eroded state of the carving. The base is square (the rounded main part is made square by the figures at the corners). The wooden (pine) cover has a sculptural figure, originally from the pulpit; it is dated 1708 by an inscription; it is the work of cabinet-maker Olof Jönsson, who did other work in this church. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900831F1] as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the last quarter of the 12th century by Sigraf; the font has a limestone base and a post-Reformation cover [="funten har efterreformatoriskt lock med förgyllda figurer och är nu placerad på sekundär sockel av kalksten"]. On-site notes [visited in 1989 and 1997]: the font is badly worn and only selected images are barely discernible: a Christ in Majesty with the Apostles form a scene on the basin side; other images are very difficult to decipher [cf. Image section for full program]; this composition is similar to the one on the Bro font, also by Sighraf; the base has four figures: St. Peter with the keys, Father Abraham, the Madonna-andChild and a bishop with book; the outer surfaces the sandstone basin are badly worn but the inside of the basin well clearly shows all the scrapings and marks left by the carver; it must have been left upside down outside in order for the interior markings of the basin well to have survived; white chalk/whitewash still remains in the crevasses of the stone.
