Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. IV, hft. 3: 308-310) as a Romanesque sandstone piscina by Hegwald, dated to ca. 1130 by Roosval; two sides of the piscina, the front and the back, are illustrated. On side one, the front of the basin, a Crucifixion scene in a circle; the base, which is divided in two registers by a central braid motif, shows Daniel and two lions above the central partition [NB: Juan Antonio Olañeta communicated to BSI in August 2023 that they are not lions but dragons [cf. infra] therefore the 'Daniel and the lions' identification should be rejected], while in the lower one two figures armed with swords are seated (the caption identifies them as Herod and Herodias). On side two, the back of the basin, the caption identifies "the St. Matthew Angel" on the basin; on the upper part of the base, above the braid partition, "an animal symbolising the Soul of Man, flanked by two dragons"; below the partition, "Virgin and Child, and one of the Three Kings with a gift" (ibid., p. 311). On-site notes: the piscina is carved in two parts, the upper basin and a pedestal base; the base has two areas to it, the upper and lower registers being seprated by a thick braid; the general shape of the object is quadrangular, with a total of twelve motifs and/or scenes. Description of the scenes on the basin sides [L->R]: 1) a circle framing the composition of a Crucifixion scene: Christ stands full frontal, body straight, arms extended; he is wearing a full gown, tied at the waist with complex knot (Santos), legs parallel and both feet visible; a figure under the left arm of the cross carries a lance, while the figure under the right arm is is crouching with the upper body bent forward, arms extended forward in a gesture of prayer, head bent down; 2)next figure to the right is a passant-to-the-left ox or bull, scroll at its feet; 3)next to the right is a haloed human figure framed in a mandorla sitting on rainbow throne, holding a scroll with both hands; 4) the side to the right has a haloed lion passant-regardant in a circle, an acanthus in the background. There are head figures on the upper bowl corners. All sides of the second level, or upper base, form a single scene: a human figure with long hair and, perhaps, haloed, sits full frontal; to the left is a beaked monster resembling a dragon with wings and coiled tail; to the right is a lion or lions. The lower base is round-to-square and has a thick braid atop; the sides are scallpoed, and appear to contain two scenes, each spread over two sides; on one side a standing figure in long robes stands to the left of a seated figure holding a sword pointed up and raising his right hand to his ear; the next side [L->R] contains two seated figures with swords help, point up, in their lefts hands; the figure on the left is a woman, identified by her long braid, a Hegwald characterist; her right hand touches her left; the figure on the right seats in a similar position but is probably male; his right hand raised diagonally scross his chest, pointing up to the right with two fingers; it has been suggested that both scenes may be related to Herod, the left to the Massacre of the Innocents, the right to the deal between Herod and Herodias; it may sound far-fectched, but, after all, this is Hegwald. The next two sides illustrate the Adoration of the Magi; on the left side are two Magi, passant to the right, holding gifts and leaning on staves; on the right side is a Magus making his offering to Christ Child seated in the Madonna's knee; curiously the Madonna is haloed but Christ is not [Hegwald!]. NB: the Museum has not been very consistent in their display of this object; at the time of our first visit, in May 1997, the object was displayed in the middle of the room, all four sides visible; at the time of our second visit, August 2012, we found the piscina right against a wall, thus obscuring one side almost entirely, and providing very awkward access to one other side. Furthermore, the basin had been re-alligned with the base, making it difficult to estimate what the original allignment was; one would tentatively suggest that the Madonna and Child part of the base might be alligned with the Crucifixion of the basin, but that would leave a lonely lion alligned in the upper base, not the central seated figure...
