INFORMATION
Font ID: 00313TIG
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Date Visited: 1997-05-28; 2012-08-20
Font Century and Period/Style: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Calcarius [basin], Majestatis [base]
Cognate Fonts: [cf. FontNotes]
Church / Chapel Name: Tingstäde kyrka
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, beneath the western tower, opposite the western door
Church Notes: origianlly a wooden church of the 12thC; the present church, one of the largest on the island, has a double nave with a central column which has an ornate capital depicting four motifs at each corner, the thorn extractor, a beast lying on its back, an acrobat and beast's head.
Church Address: Tingstädevägen 44, 624 44 Tingstäde, Sweden
Site Location: Gotland, Gotlands län, Sweden, Europe
Directions to Site: Located off highway 148, in the NW part of the island, about 20 km NNE of Visby
Ecclesiastic Region: Gotland stift -- Stenkyrka församling
Historical Region: Lösings och Björkekinds härad -- Lummelunda ting
Additional Comments: damaged font: the basin is very worn, to the point that some scenes are no longer discernible. Even though the base is close in design to those carved by the Majestatis workshop (Fåhreus: 43), the large scalloped motif of the underside of the basin and the dimensions of the basin are similar to fonts carved by Semi-Byzantios. The base may not be the original one made for this basin. The dimensions of the basin are also closer to the Calcarius works than examples from other workshops, which suggests that it should be attributed to the Calcarius workshop (recheck attribution and measurements] for figural style is like the semi-Byzantios workshop, eg. Two Towers in Visitation scene.

Described and illustrated in Sveriges kyrkor: Gotland (Bd. I, hft. 2: 168-172) as a cylindrical mounted baptismal font, made of sandstone by the Majestatis workshop and dated to the late 12th century by Roosval (the lower base, however, is limestone and from a different date). Described and illustrated by Maja Lundquist, in Roosval (1917). In Fåhraeus (1974). Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910428F1] as a "Majestatis" baptismal font made of sandstone in the late-12th century. The basin is very worn and the scenes are hardly visible anymore. The stem of the base has the typical protruding heads and motifs in the spaces betwen; the lower base is made of limestone and ornamented, a much later work. On-site notes: the font is badly worn and only one scene is barely visible. There was a Nativity scene on it originally, and may have been similar to the one on the font at Alskog. The underside of the bowl was scalloped and still shows the pattern fairly clearly. The stem of the base is round, with four heads and motifs between the heads. There was an acanthus(?) motif on the north side of the base; the lower base is a separate stone ornamented with rope motif on the upper surface and a band of foliage on the sides. The lid and the apparatus to lift the lid which appeared in the Westerberg drawing of 1924 (SK: Gotland, Bd. I, hft. 3: fig. 88 on p. 172) remains [reconstructed]; it consists of a an avian-shaped arm up in the wall, from which the pulley descends to the upper hook on the lid [detailed illustrations in Fåhraeus (1974: 133)].
