No individual entry found for Roche in the Domesday survey. Noted in Lysons (1806-1833) as one of a group of Cornish fonts that includes Bodmin, “St. Austell, St. Columb-Minor, Crantock, Cuby, St. Dennis, St. Gorran, Luxulion, Newlyn, Roche, Southill, Tintagell, Veryan, and St. Wen”. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a fine Norman font" in this church. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as a magnificent Norman font, sister to that of Bodmin; squared-top bowl has human faces at the angles from which issue non-constructional shafts; the lower part of the bowl is round and has floral and vegetable motifs; also a pattern that may be heraldic (?); the centre stem is slender. Listed in Cox (1912) as one of a group "of characteristically Cornish design […] a fine example of Bodmin type." Hutton (1957) describes it as Transitional or Early English and adds that this type of ornamentation "persisted longer in Cornwall than elsewhere." (ibid.) Noted in Pevsner (1970) as Norman. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SW9879659796] notes: "Parish church. C14, largely rebuilt mid C15; in 1822 substantially altered for the Rev. Thomas Fisher, later alterations, probably to the south porch, and restoration of 1890 by J. D. Sedding. [...] The north transept is said to be on Norman foundations, largely rebuilt in the C14. The tower is of C15 [...] Fine late C12 Bodmin-type font in south aisle, in Pentewan stone; a large bowl on central stem with 4 corner shafts with bases. The shafts end in carved angels' heads, much restored and With one angel replaced. The bowl has interlaced snakes under chevron rim." On-site notes: there has been some restoration done on the font - one head, and, where the original lid hinges were broken off - these portions have been replaced. The basin has a central drainage hole; no lining.
