There are two entries for Stoneleigh [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP3372/stoneleigh/] [accessed 10 February 2015]; the part in King William's lordship mentions two priests, but not a church, though there probably was one there. A font in this church is illustrated in a 30 July 1841 drawing by Henry E.L. Dryden, in the Sir Henry Dryden Collection, Northamptonshire. Described in Romilly Allen (1888) as a baptismal font "with the names of the Twelve Apostles inscribed." [NB: R.-A. spells the name of the place "Stonleigh". Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as a bucket-shaped baptismal font of the Norman period/style mounted on a short round pedestal base; the sides of the upper basin have masks or heads; the rest of the basin is ornamented with an arcade in which the Apostels stand, their names inscribed on the corresponding arches. Bond (ibid.) identifies the two in the front as Matthew and Andrew. In arguing against a pre-Conquest date for this font, Bond (ibid.) refers to the piers in the fonts at Ilam and Stoneleigh as "fluted just after the fashion of those of Durham Cathedral, which was no commenced till 1093." The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 6, 1951) notes: "The Domesday Survey of 1086 mentions two priests at Stoneleigh, [...] and when Kenilworth Priory was founded, in 1122, Henry I gave 'the church of Stoneleigh of my demesne with the lands, tithes, and churchscots (cherchez) and all things pertaining to it' to the priory, his gift being afterwards confirmed by Henry II. [...] The grant was made at the request of Thurstan, Archbishop of York, who then held the church and himself executed a charter giving it to the priory [NB: Thurstan died in 1140] [...] The parish church [...] dates from the latter part of the 12th century [...] It was drastically rebuilt and the south aisle added about the middle of the 14th century. [...] The font, placed on the south side of the door at the west end, is of the 12th century and is said to have been brought from Maxstoke Abbey. It is circular, with twelve arcaded niches containing figures of the Apostles, and stands on a modern circular base of two steps. It has a deep lead-lined basin." Described in Davidson (1985) who dates it to the 12th century and identifies the figures as the twelve apostles. On-site notes: lead-lined basin well; central drainage; the twelve figures stand in a round-arch arcade with various accessories, their names inscribed around each arch; the figure of John is of particular interest: he holds his hands up, palms holding an unrolled scroll; other Apostles are easily identified by their symbol, in the case of Peter holding a large key and a book, or, when the symbol is not so readily discernible, by the inscription in the arch-head above, as with Paul, to the right of Peter, James, etc.; in the spandrels between each niche are carved heads and beasts - some are grotesque, some wear crowns - an odd assortment; the base is modern. There is evidence of an earlier lid on the upper rim of the basin. [NB: local info: the font is said to have come from Maxstoke Priory where it lay amid the ruins for more than 250 years; it replaced another Norman font which is said to have been in the church as late as 1803, but was probably removed during the 1811-1825 renovations, and there is no available information on it at present].
