Corblet [1881-1882] describes a font, now "au Musée", but originally "ayant appartenu à l'église d'Eschau", as having almost perpendicular sides and two registers of ornamentation; Corblet dates this font to the 10th century and describes the scenes included as: the Annunciation to the Virgin, the Nativity, the Annunciation to the shepherds, the Presentation at the church, the Triumphal Entrance in Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the cross, the Three Marys at the tomb, a mutilated scene, and the Descent of the Holy Ghost. Enlart (1902) puts it in a group of "cuves circulaires sans pied", describes its ornamentation as "scènes de la vie du Christ" and dates to the 12th or 13th century. Described and illustrated in Braun (2010), who informs that the font was badly damaged by bombs in 1870; Braun (ibid.) suggests a date after 1160 for the font and remarks on the similarity between the arches that support the Pentecost scene here and those on the Adeloch sarchophage [i.e., 12th-century, from the church of Saint-Thomas, of Strasbourg, also in the Musée de l'Oeuvre...]. A full dossier on the font, its particulars and bibliography can be found in Florent Ostheimer [MOND 369 Cuve baptismale.pdf] [accessed 24 September 2019], among which details: "12e siècle (3e quart) [...] Cuve baptismale circulaire, peut-être sans pieds à l'origine (étant donné sa hauteur). Registre inférieur : l'Annonciation, la Nativité, l'Annonce aux bergers, Présentation au temple, Baptême du Christ, Entrée à Jérusalem. Registre supérieur: la Sainte Cène, Arrestation du Christ, Déposition de croix, les Saintes femmes au tombeau, la Descente aux limbes (scène manque mais est plausible), la Pentecôte."
On-site notes: one of the baptismal fonts now [2002] displayed in the Musée de l'Oeuvre de Notre-Dame, Strasbourg, though originally from the Église Saint-Trôphime, in Eschau; what remains are a number of fragments that have been mounted on a cylindrical shell, matching the shape of the original font. The program was divided into two registers: the UPPER REGISTER included: the Last Supper, the Arrest of Christ, the Deposition, the Three Maries at the Tomb, a completely disappeared scene, and the Holy Ghost flames on the Apostles' heads in Pentecost; the LOWER REGISTER had [starting exactly below the Last Supper]: the Annunciation to Mary with flowering shrub, the Nativity with Mary resting her hand on the Child, Joseph's First Dream, the Annunciation to the Shepherds, the Presentation in the Temple, the Baptism of Christ, Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, an Heavenly Jerusalem (?). The museum records have the font dated to ca. 1130. [NB: this is the same font listed in this Index as "Eschau" which Enlart locates in the library and Corblet in the museum, although Corblet mentions a second figurative font in the "Musée" [to be resolved]]. Sketch from the Index of Christian Art [cited source: Cahiers d'archéologie d'Alsace, V, fig. 112, p. 202] [source: Cahiers d'archaeologie. Alsace, 1927-1929, vol. V, fig. 112, p. 202, in Index of Christian Art # 101212)]. [NB: Braun (ibid.) notes that a Romanesque object that has been listed as a holy-water stoup in this church [though the one in the church is a copy; the original one is at the Musée de l'Oeuvre...] is actually a piscine [="lavabo"]]
