INFORMATION

FontID: 00242VAS
Church/Chapel: Västerplana kyrka
Church Patron Saints: St. Mary the Virgin [original dedication]
Church Location: Västerplana kyrkby, 531 95 Västerplana, Sweden -- Tel.: +46 510 54 21 09
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Västergötland, Västra Götalands län
Directions to Site: Located 7-8 km NNE of Källby, in the municipality and about 15 km WNW of Götene, across from Lidköping on the E shores of the Kinneviken
Ecclesiastic Region: Skara stift
Historical Region: Kinne härad, Skaraborgs län
Font Location in Church: Inside the church [cf. FontNotes]
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Master Othelric? / Bestiarius? / Skaragruppen [SHM]
Cognate Fonts: [cf. FontNotes]
Church Notes: 12thC church; modified 18thC [NB: this modification changed the canonical orientation of the building, pointing the chancel to the south, instead of the east]; abandoned 1820s; restored 1924
Noted and illustrated, with some measurements, in P.A. Säve's Berättelse (1863: (s. 68, ATA) [cf. ImagesArea]; while Säve identifies the material of the font as limestone in this source, others give sandstone. Noted and illustrated in Hildebrand (1907: fig. 236). Noted in Hallbäck (1971). Nordström (1984: 133, 168fn14) identifies a horseback warrior fighting a centaur or dragon, but it is actually an armed centaur fighting a scaly dragon whose tail is wrapped around one of the columns of the arcade. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920516F5] as a Skaragruppen baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century with traces of several colours on it. Medieval baptismal font consisting of a cylindrical basin raised on a round moulded base. The sides of the basin are decorated with an arcade of round arches in which are housed animals and/or scenes: over two arches an archer on horseback hunts (fights?) a facing lion; two arrows are shown: one just right of the bow, the next one touching the breast of the lion, thus giving the effect of a moving projectile; a roundel or shield? just behind the archer. Svenska kyrkan [www.svenskakyrkan.se/savare/harjevad-kyrka] [accessed 28 February 2020] gives master Othelric as the carver of the fonts at Härjevad, Hornborga, Norra Härene, Öttum, Skeby, Västerplana and of the church of Skälvum. Octagonal dome wooden font cover of the late-17th century; the eight scroll ribs on it are actually female figures on their backs; fruit-bunch finial; the inner surface of the cover is carved with a foliage pattern all around. [NB: the medieval font, which would have been originally located at the west end of the nave of the medieval church, shows through the different photographs of record [cf. ImagesArea] as being moved around the new chancel area in the late-19th century and the early decades of the 20th century; the latest photographs available at this time [July 2020] show the font in the original chancel [gamla koret], which was replaced by the present chancel with a south orientation in the 18th century -- the original east side would be the north side of the present orientation].
