There is no entry for Southrop in the Domesday survey, but Moor (1867) writes: "the parish of Southrop, (usually pronounced Sutherup), another little village near Fairford, supposed by some to be the Laca of 'Domesday Book'." [LECE, folio 168v]. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period [NB: C&H spell it "Southdrop"]. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908) as a Norman baptismal font, a variant of the one at Stanton Fitzwarren. The Southrop font has only eight pairs [Humilitas over Superbia appear on the Stanton-F... font but not on this one]; each virtue is "represented as an armed knight trampling on a vice" (ibid.), with its name above it, while the names of the vices are written backwards and vertically. Buck (1951) looks into the sources of the iconographic programme on this and the Stanton Fitzwarren font. Stone (1955) notes that the allegorical cycle "of the battle of Virtues and Vices, popularised in a manuscript well known to the Anglo-Saxons, the 'Psychomachia' of Prudentius", was probably the inspirational source for the iconography in the fonts at Stanton Fitzwarren and Southrop. Anderson (1955) points out the artist's error in depicting Patientia chastising Ira with a whip, "having taken over the instrument with which Pudictia should scourge Libido", and remarks that "the carvers imperfectly understood their theme". Noted and illustrated in Kaske (1968). The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 7, 1981) notes: "The small rural parish of Southrop [...] was known as Leach after the river in 1086, [...] but from at least 1211 the name Southrop, [...] associating it with the local group of names that includes Hatherop, Botherop (Eastleach Martin), and Williamstrip, was used. [...] In 1086 35 inhabitants of Southrop were recorded. [...] There was a priest at Southrop, and therefore presumably a church, in 1086 [...] The church of ST. PETER [...] The nave is of the 12th century and most of the original walling, with the stones laid herringbone fashion, [...] survives together with two windows and the north doorway, which is of two orders with a lattice-decorated tympanum. The 12th-century chancel arch also survives, but the chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century [...] The richly decorated font dates from the 12th century; the bowl is carved with an arcade filled with figure sculpture showing the Virtues overcoming the Vices." The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: SP2021503418] notes: "Parish church. Early C12, C13 chancel and early C14 transept. Restored in 1852; again in 1895. [...] This church is important for the extent of surviving Norman work, the font, and its link with John Keble, one of the instigators of the Oxford Movement. [...] C12 circular font is very important with well-preserved arcading and figures in relief. Dating from c1180 it was discovered by John Keble during his period as curate here in 1823-5." [cf. infra] Noted and illustrated in the CRSBI (2019) with date to mid- to late-12th century. [...] A small portion of the stone of the font is beginning to flake. It is located in the beaded band above Ecclesia, and probably should receive early attention. Stone reports the drapery of the figures as "naturalistically conceived, and awakening the interest in realism is shown by the gesture of Ira (Anger) to protect her body from the whip. [...] Pevsner, Zarnecki and Verey suggest c.1180 for the font and Lawrence Stone suggests c.1170." On-site notes: there are eight trefoil arches around the arcade encircling the bowl: on the eastern side stands Moses with his tablets of the Old Law and on his right is Ecclesia and on his left is Synagogia; moving from left to right, after Synagogia, Modestia stands over Ebrietas (Excess), followed by: Paciencia over Ira, Largitas (Generosity), over Avaricia; Temperancia (Temperance) over Luxuria; Misericordia (Pity) over Invidia (Envy). The names of the vices incised on the side of the corresponding figures and, as Bond (Ibid.) indicates [cf. above] are spelled backwards; the names of the virtues are inscribed correctly on the arches above them. The upper 1/3 of the basin side is ornamented with a beautiful interlace of beaded-tape; the two strands open up at regular intervals leaving wide spaces in which a palmette motif resides; where the strands cross, a lovely square bucle frames the junction; each spandrel of the arcade has a small building, chiefly towers filling the space. The basin is almost cylindrical -slightly wider at the top- unmounted and lined with lead; central drainage hole. [NB: notes available in the vicarage date this baptismal font to ca. 1180 -- same notes inform that the font was discovered built into the south doorway by John Keble at the time he was curate here, 1823-1825; the font was extricated and re-installed in the church].
