Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913- ) as a baptismal font of Scanian sandstone; the author gives a version of the inscription. Noted in Roosval (1918). Studied and illustrated in M. Rydbeck (1936); her attribution to the Byzantios workshop is questionable. The Romanesque baptismal font has a tall cylindrical basin and a round base ornamented with four heads, mixed animal and human; the upper rim side of the basin has an inscription; the sides of the basin are ornamented with several large circles in which there are animals (eagles, lion, etc.) and scanes (the baptism of Christ, with John, an angel and the dove). Nordström (1984) notes the appearance of the Baptism of Christ on this font. Also noted in Tuulse (1968). An illustration in Källström and Askmark (1948) shows the baptism of Christ scene and also gives Byzantios as the master. The cylindrical basin has the Baptism scene at the front; the rest of the surface is decorated with five large circles linked by lion heads and other motifs; inside the circles are: 1)an acanthus plant; 2)a fabulous animal (or perhaps just a fancy lion); 3-4) a hunting scene, a man with dog and horn chases an animal in the previous circle; 5)a pair of facing fanciful beasts, winged quadrupeds with avian heads; without a circle frame is a large acanthus fruit; around the upper side is Latin inscription; the base is moulded and has four heads, two human (male, moustachiod, one Negro); two animal, ptobably lions. A copy of this font exists at the Göteborgs stadsmuseum [inv. ref. G.M. 2235]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900507F1] [accessed 12 October 2010] with suggested date in the mid-12th century; identified here as sandstone.
