INFORMATION

FontID: 00222RYA
Church/Chapel: Rya kyrka [originally from Rya gamla kyrka]
Church Location: [NB: address & coordinates are for the old church] Rya kyrkoruin, Rya 144, 286 91 Örkelljunga, Sweden -- address & contact for the new church: Stinsens väg 2, 286 95 Eket, Sweden -- Tel.: +46 435 500 14
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Skåne, Skåne län
Directions to Site: The ruins of the old church are located off (S) local road M1838, a few hundred m. S of highway E4, in the municipality and about 8 km SW of Örkelljunga -- the new church is located almost 2 km NE
Ecclesiastic Region: Lunds Stift
Historical Region: Norra Åsbo härad
Font Location in Church: Inside the new church, in the SE corner of the nave
Century and Period: 12th century, Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Mörarps workshop / Mörarpsgruppen [Rydbeck, SHM, Tynell ] / Össjögruppen [Tynell]
Cognate Fonts: others such in those groups
Church Notes: ruins of the medieval (12th-13th?) church remain; the new church was built in 1875 almost 2 km from the old one -- old church still used in summer for some cult events
Described and illustrated in Tynell (1913-1921) as a baptismal font made of sandstone in the 'Össjögruppen', 'Mörarpsgruppen'. Described and illustrated in Rydbeck (1936) in her section on the 'Mörarpsgruppen' fonts. Noted in Nordström (1984) as a font with a scene of Christ in Majesty. Noted in Trotzig (1989). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900514F2] as a 'Mörarpsgruppen' baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century, with remains of oil-based paint on it. No cover present. Beside the scene of Christ in Majesty, where Christ is shown between two haloed figures, one of whom, holding a large key would be Peter, there are also two sides in which there are two pairs of angels; another side has two figues, on the right an angel, on the left perhaps Mary, making it an Annunciation scene; all the figures are inside and arcade of round arches, all with columnar support except the arches in the Majestas scene, in which the arches have no support; the corners of the basin are decorated with columns that have heads or masks [animal?] atop, with snakes slithering up the stems; there is a rope moulding below the upper rim but it is damaged in many areas; the quadrangular base is decorated with a band of scalloped pattern, a roll moulding and a sort of rather unsusual chain pattern around its middle.
