Described and illustrated in Schayes (1839) who mentions the font at Termonde, together with the ones at Tirlemont and Zedelgem, as the oldest of this type in Belgium. Schayes (ibid.) states that the font is made of copper ["en cuivre"], gives some measurements of the basin and records two of the inscriptions. Schayes (ibid.) further notes the disppeared base which incorporated a lion and a griffin, the former ridden by a human lifting a cup in one hand, his other arm raised "vers le ciel"; also there was a winged figure, "ange our génie" with arms stretched; part of this base disappeared by Schayes' time; the whole was raised on a stone plinth of octagonal shape, decorated with a bronze lion head at each angle. [NB: Van Hasselt's citation of Schayes is not verbatim -- cf. InscriptionsArea and ImageArea in this record for the text as published by Schayes]. Described in Didron (1859), though he does not refer to it by any of the known names of the place it came from. Noted in Le Grand de Reulandt (1865) as a font that. together with the one at St-Barthelemy in Liege, were made of "cuivre battu", the product of "l'ancienne industrie dinantaise du XIIe siècle connue sous le nom de dinanderie et qu'avaient illustrée notamment les batteurs Jehan Patras et Jehan Joses". [NB: there is a replica of the font and it is made of copper, but the original font is cast bronze]. De Bruyn (1869) mentions the fonts at "Saint-Barthélemy, à Liége, et de Saint-Germain, à Tirlemont" as "spécimens typiques de la dinanderie au XIIe siècle". In Van de Casteele (1877). In his catalogue of the "Art chrétien" exhibition, Jansen (1964) describes the font as being of cast bronze "repoussé et ciselé" and confirms the dating of 1149 inscribed on the basin side. The basin has an upper register with 14 arches: the Baptism of Christ, the Agnus Dei, a Crucifixion, Christ on a rainbow, some Apostles, Evangelists et al. (a/p Jansen: Andrew, Germanus, Paul, Peter, Matthew, Luke and the symbols for John and Mark); the lower half of the basin is ornamented with incised spirals; inscriptions run all over the free spaces of the basin sides. The base is a central colonnette and six outer thin S-shaped ribs, all of which rest on a hexagonal stone platform decorated with lion torsos at the rib ends and floral motifs at the hexagon sides. Two half-bodies of lions carrying an angel and a knight (a/p Jansen) stem from the central colonnette of the base and rest their front legs on the stone platform. Jansen (ibid.) states that the font was acquired in 1848 from the church of St-Germain in Tirlemont (Nockert, 1995). "Cuve baptismale de l'eglise Saint-Germain de Tirlemont, de 1149 ... est aux Musees royaux d'art et d'histoire de Bruxelles." (Favreau, 1985). Carlsson (1976) mentions the presence of two lion-and-man motifs on it, and notes the 1149 dating. Described and illustrated in Ronse (1929), who gives the metal as copper. Described and illustrated in Zarnecki (1957) who dates it to between 1150 and 1160; on the base, he writes: "the motive of the supporting lions is of Italian origin. The stone base seems to have been re-cut, probably in the fourteenth century." Barral i Altet (1999) informs that the basin was originally mounted on a base decorated with animals. Drake (2002) states that, according to metallurgical analyses carried out and provided by Lutze, the two standing animals of the base are contemporary with the basin; the rest of the base was a candle-holder date ca. 1500 re-used for this font. [NB: a square mounted font with head ornamentation is shown in the Zodiaque's view of the W tower (Barral i Altet (1989), but no other information is available at present on that font and it is not listed in this index]. Colman & Colman (2002) show the Tirlemont font with the original 1149 date, and with modifications in the 15th and 19th centuries. The font is now [2010] displayed without the later base; instead a plain background allows for the display of the two original lions with riders. De Inventaris van het Bouwkundig Erfgoed [https://inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/dibe/relict/42838] [accessed 10 March 2015] reports that a copy of the 12th-century font is now displayed in this church, in the chapel of the north aisle; the original is kept in the K.M.K.G./ Musées royaux d'art et d'histoire, in Brussels). [NB: for the stone font located outside the church see BSI entry for Rummen]. [NB: the present font in St Germanuskerk, noted and illustrated in BALaT [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/9487] [accessed 22 August 2022] is modern, of 1897].
