view of font

Scene Description: showing parts of the two scenes that decorate the font: from the centre to the right are the six sleeping soldiers that belong to the Three Marys at the tomb scene; the left side is occupied by two full-figure monstruous beings. one clearly a horned devil, the other, slender and to its right, a large standing snake with a coiled tail; farther to the left, three ugly heads of Hell residents; a wall appears to separate the evil souls on this side from the good souls being rescued by Christ; unlike the ugly faces of the evil souls on the right side of the wall, the heads of the good souls that appear to the left of the wall are regular-featured and look towards the rescuing Christ

Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Sancho Campo (1971), who dates to the 12th century and attributes it to the 'maestro de Perazancas'. Described in Martín González (1977); in Guerra (1986 c1978); in García Guinea (1990) and (1998), where it is dated to the late 12th century; in Bilbao (1996). In Kroesen & Steensma (2004) with date to the late 12th century. The Harrowing of Hell scene is identified and illustrated in Rodríguez Montañés (2006). Noted and illustrated in Martín Jiménez (2008). On-site notes: large bucket-shaped baptismal font ornamented with two major scenes: the Harrowing of Hell has itself three sequences: the first, at the extreme right, reproduces the inner chamber of Hell occupied by a large serpent, a pot-bellied demon with horns, claws and a hairy body, and threedeformed heads representing the condemned souls; a narrow passage-way and an arch open the second sequence, visible beyond a partially fallen wall, in which the elected souls wait orderly in Limbo for the arrival of Christ through a set of doors which are right there being broken open by Him; the third sequence shows a forceful Christ in profile carrying a staff in his right hand while he pulls one of the souls by the arm; this is a powerful dynamic Christ, with long braided hair and beard, his mighty hand about to strike with his staff; there is naked figure behind Christ with his hands to the chest, one soul already rescued from Hell. The next scene shows the Three Marys at the Sepulchre which is flanked by two angels holding censers, the one on the right with his hand on the tomb slab while he tells the three women about the Resurrected Christ; the scene is completed at both ends with groups of soldiers armed with shield and spear and covered in coat-of-mail; they complete the Three Marys scene. The lower base has quatrefoil and diamond ornament. Alvarez Martínez (2007) remarks on the connection between themes of the Passion and Resurrection with the regenerative waters of baptism.
