Additional Comments: recycled font used previously as sundial: "The base of the font re-carved when the font was used (upside down) as the base of a sundial from 1818-1905" (Bostrom (ibid.))
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Boström (1966- ): Bd. II, hft. 2 (1975), p. 381ff) as a baptismal font of Gotland sandstone, dated to the 1170s or 1180s and "closely related to Sighraf and the anonymous Bestiarius" [Roosval cited as source]. "The base of the font re-carved when the font was used (upside down) as the base of a sundial from 1818-1905" (ibid.). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920810F3] as a "Hegvald, kretsen kring" baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century; the SHM database entry makes reference to Boström, Anderson and Roosval [cf. supra], and their attributions to Sigraf and Bestiarius, but states its workmanship rather as being of the circle of Hegvald. The basin is cylindrical with a tallish chamfer; the vertical sides of the basina re ornamented with an arcade of five broad round arches with foliage (?) motif in the spandrels; the arches themselves contain: a Nativity over two arches, an Adoration of the Magi over another two arches, and, lastly, an Annunciation to the Shepherds under a single arch. The base had four lions heads, at 90-degree angles, three of which are still recognisable. This font has suffered much, as the reworking of the base and the upper rim of the basin show, but the iconographic program on the basin sides is still in fair, though not by any means perfect, shape.
