Font Notes:
Described and illustrated by Ellen Fryklund in Roosval (1917). The 12th-century(?) sandstone font was handed over to the Statens Historiska Museum of Stockholm in 1870. Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 950519F5] as a baptismal font made of sandstone by a provincial workshop ca, 1200. On-site notes: the font consists of a roughly-cylindrical basin raised on a round moulded squat base; there are scenes on the basin sides [L->R]: Baptism in the Jordan waters, Christ nimbed and holding a processional cross; a figure standing on the left of the scene may or may not be part of the scene, while the other figure to the left of Christ is probably John the Baptist; a figure standing to the right of the Baptism scene and touching(?) Christ's arm could be part of the scene as well, one of the angels usually standing by; the figure to the right of that one is haloed, wielding sword and shield and engaged in fight with an equally armed centaur, while a large bird appears to struggle between the two fighters; the next scene to the right is harder to decipher, but appears to involve at least one large quadruped in passant-regardant pose, perhaps with a smaller animal(?) on its back and one other figure with a reaised weapon behind and to the left; next right is a quadruped passant to the right with what appears to be a foliage motif on its back, but it quite likely a lion and the 'plant' motif its raised tail; in front of the legs of this animal is a much smaller one, also a quadruped, with a cross on its back, likely an Agnus Dei. Much eroded. The baptismal font in use in this church is made of oak, said to date from the early-20th century.
