human figure - male - warrior - on horseback - with bow and arrow - fighting a warrior on foot armed with shield and sword

Scene Description: [NB: this is a horizontally flipped image of the KMB pjhotograph, which we believe was reversed unitentionally] The complete scene with the two warriors is visible here; unlike the scene of the Baptism of Christ, here the artist has left the supporting column in the middle of the scene, in front of which the arrows from the archer seem to travel rightwards

view of font in context

Scene Description: the baptismal font originally from Sävare kyrka is seen here in the context of the interior of Edåsa kyrka from the time of its decommissioning as parish church until 1938, a period when this church served as a local branch museum of the Västergötlands fornminnesförening; after 1938 the contents were transferred to the new Västergötlands Museum or returned to the appropriate churches, and this church returned to its liturgical function as parish church

Four (?) large fragments remain of the basin of the medieval baptismal from the old church at Sävare, a font said to be by 'mäster Andreas' workshop, like those at Grovare and Hillared [cf. corresponding BSI entries]; the fragments show that an arcade of round arches decorated the basis sides: 1)Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, John holds Christs right arm in his left hand, and a book in his right hand; Christ haloed, right arm held up in benediction, holding a processional cross in his left hand; the scene occupies two arches and there is no supporting column for the middle arch-head; 2)fight scene betweem a mounted archer and a foot warrior armed with shield and sword; 3)fight scene between St George and the dragon; 4)unidentified scene with angel holding a book and pointing; the scene happens across two arch-heads without the supporting middle colum; 5)a similar scene with the angel facing the opposite way; 6)only the hind quarters and the raised tail of an animal [a lion?] remain of another scene; the spandrels of the arcade are decorated with foliage motifs; some of the capitals of the arcade show motifs matching those in the spandrels. [NB: according to the Västergötlands Museum records [https://digitaltmuseum.se/search/?q=&aq=topic%3F%3A"dopfunt" place%3F%3A"Sävare" owner%3F%3A"S-VGM"&o=0&n=80] [accessed 7 March 2020] four(?) fragments of this medieval font were found in he churchyard wall ["kyrkogårdsmuren"] in the 1860s, and later moved to the Västergötlands Museum]. This font was probably made by the same Andreas workshop that produced the fonts of Grovare and Hillared [cf. BSI entries] [NB***: some KMB photographs appear to have been reversed*** we indicate those in the ImagesArea, as well as providing the correct ones]
