"Excellent font completed in 1151 and signed by one Robertus". On the lower round basin "ten marble reliefs representing scenes from the times of Moses." (Schiller, 1971). In the Index of Christian Art (ref. 04820). Nordström (1984) discusses the font. Described and illustrated in Ridolfi (2002): the following are the scenes identified on the basin side: 1)Abraham repudiates Agar who departs with Ishmael on her shoulders as Isaac watches; 2)Esther enthroned by Assuerus (Xerxes I, king of Persia); 3)Moses holds the staff that becomes a serpent; 4)God speaks to Moses; 5)Crossing of the Red Sea: the Pharaoh and his army; 6)Moses receives the tablets; 7)Moses delivers the Deuteronomy to the Levitesin the presence of Aaron; 8)a series of seven arches containin a figure in each; one is identified as the Good Shepherd, the others, two female and four male, are believed to represent the congregation of the faithful or, perhaps, saints. This same source ellaborates on the partial inscription and suggests that the "M[...]LI" before the word "ROBERTUS" stands for "MILLEGLI" a local form of representing the date "1151"; it also suggests the the "MAGIST-LA" stands for "MAGISTER LAPIDUM", and identifies the material of the font as Carrara marble.
