Font Notes:
Dated in Garnacho (1878: 27) in the early 11th century. Listed in Cobreros (1993). Described and illustrated in Sáinz Sáiz (1999) and in Rivera de las Heras (2001): tub-shaped Romanesque baptismal font; the sides are ornamented with seven arches that contain a scene of the Baptism of Christ, figures of several Apostles/saints among which Rivera de las Heras (ibid.) identifies St. Peter and St. John, and a censer-bearing angel [one of the arches has an angel carrying a bowl (censer?) in its left hand; the figure identified by Rivera de las Heras (ibid.) as Peter carries in his right hand an object that hangs low and could be either a key or a censer]. Described and illustrated in Fernández Mateos (2010). The font is raised on a circular plinth. There is no font cover present. On-site notes: the font is in rather a poor condition, the carving being very eroded; two metal staples are still evident on the rim, witnesses of an earlier font cover. A church hand-out [cf. BSI file] dates the font to the 13th century and identifies the stone as local ["de piedra tosca zamorana" [cf. supra]]. The font, together with the building itself and the mural paintings, was restored in 2009-2010 [cf. report by Sergio Pérez Martín in 'Iglesia de Santa María la Nueva. Noted and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del romanico...
