design element - architectural - arcade - round arches - columns with capitals and bases

Scene Description: the carver has been creative in the rendition of the supporting columns; in one scene, the warrior fighting a dragon, there is no supporting column in the centre, and the tail of the dragon wraps around the column behind; in the Baptism scene the columns are there, but are seen only partially behind the characters and the action; the same occurs in the centaur fighting scene

INFORMATION

FontID: 00130SKA
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Church/Chapel: Skälvums Kyrka
Church Location: Skälvums kyrkby, 533 95 Götene, Sweden -- Tel.: +46 511 285 00
Country Name: Sweden
Location: Västergötland, Västra Götalands län
Directions to Site: Located off (N) highway 44, in the municipality of Götene and WSW of it, N of Skara
Ecclesiastic Region: Skara stift
Historical Region: Kinnefjärdings härad
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in the nave, W of the chancel, S side
Date: ca. 1150?
Century and Period: 12th century (mid-to-late?) [basin only] [composite font], Medieval [composite]
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Master Othelric? / Skaragruppen
Cognate Fonts: other fonts in the Skaragruppen
Church Notes: The church is small but very old, much of it 12thC [ca. 1136?] and unchanged until the 1961 restoration - the windows in the western tower match those carved on the Gotland fonts which depict images of a church. They should be used to date the works.
Font Notes:
Noted in Hallbäck (1971). In Svanberg (1995). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920517F1] as the surviving basin of a Skaragruppen baptismal font made of sandstone in the second half of the 12th century; the SHM entry (ibid.) remarks that, although the font has been attributed to Othelric, the mason who signed on the tympanum of this church, there is no stylistic resemblance between the font and that work. On-site notes: there are several scenes on this font framed in an arcade of eight round arches. The bowl is in good condition, but the base and plinth are modern replacements. There are three scenes on this font: 1)a warrior, carrying a long pointed shield in his left and and a sword in his right hand, fights a winged dragon whose tail is wrapped around the column behind; the warrior faces right; 2)another scene shows three figures, the first on foot, in profile, holding sword and shield, the second on horseback, with sword and shield fighting a centaur which also has a shield, but no weapon visible although it may be hidden by the shield; 3)the other scene is the Baptism of Chist; it shows in the left arch an angel (?), frontal pose, carrying in the right hand a codex, holds with his left hand holds an acanthus branch or candle with flame? to the right of the angel is another figure, in a kneeling position, the left hand holds up a scroll, the right to the middle or holding the elbow of the left arm? the next figure to the right half-kneeling, holds in the right hand a scroll to his chest, and the left hand holds Christ's right hand; Christ is in the water to his waist, forefront, haloed, cross in halo; his left hand holds a processional cross. There has been some attempt to attribute this font to the carver who signed 'Othelric me fecit" on the tympanum, but, as the SHM remarks [cf. supra] probably not an adroit attribution. The basin was cracked through, as it shows in the early photographs [cf. ImagesArea], but has been repaired. No cover present.
