Font Notes:
Noted in Hallbäck (1971). Listed and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920517F2] with date in the 12th century. Svenska kyrkan [www.svenskakyrkan.se/savare/harjevad-kyrka] [accessed 28 February 2020] gives master Othelric as the carver of the fonts at Härjevad, Hornborga, Norra Härene, Öttum, Skeby, Västerplana and of the church of Skälvum. This font was carved by the same workshop which carved the Skalvum font. It his chalice shaped, has three scenes on the bowl. Divided by round arches, an arcade frames the three scenes: 1)Baptism of Christ; there are three figures present, to the left is an angel pointing to an enormous bird (dove?) (holy spirit?); to the right is John the Baptism holding a book in his right hand and with his left hand holds the wrist of the right hand of Christ, who is immersed in water, holding a processional cross in his left hand; 2)to the right of the Baptism scene is a warrior (St. Michael) fighting a dragon; 3)a man on horseback armed with a bow and arrow fights against a centaur holding a large shield and possibly a sword [a 'querky' detail here: the bow, though stretched, has no arrow in it, but two -not- one- arrows are on the way towards the centaur, somehow bypassing the column]; like the one on the font at Skalvum, has some supporting columns, while some of the arch-heads have no support [e.g.: the Baptism scene occupies three arches, but has supporting columns only at the extreme ends; the centre arch-head has no support on the left and, curiously, only the half bottom of the right column, so that the carver could show the John holding Christ's arm] others have full columns and the spandrels are decorated with a stylised foliated motif; the underside of the bowl has the head of a beast, a floral motif and another motif that is now damaged and cannot be identified; the lower end consists of two parts: a plain circular lower base, and a short moulded plinth, also round; the latter may be of a later date. No cover present. The upper rim of the basin shows significant damage at various spots.
