animal - fabulous animal or monster - centaur - 2 - fighting

Scene Description: the centaur on the right is armed with sword and shield while the one on the left is armed with bow and arrows; the scene is very dynamic, as some arrows are shown travelling rightwards without consideration of the pillar that divides the scene into two arches, while others are already stuck on the shield of the centaur on the right

view of church exterior - southeast view

Scene Description: Source caption: "Kyrkan tillhörde Härjevads socken men står nu mer på Västergötlands friluftsmuseum i Skara." the old church seen here in its post-1921 location in the open-air museum; the tower of the old church was not moved with the 17thC church, probably because it was not original but a later addition; the bell tower or cote seen in the background of this photograph wa originally from Kärråkra kyrka, and would probably be similar to the original one at Härjevad's, if ever there was one there.

The font here is described and illustrated in the entry for this church in Utdrag af Antiqvitets-Intendenten P.A. Noted as a font with figural decoration in Erland Lagerloff's entry in Sveriges Kyrkor (vol. 199, 1985). The font consists of a round basin the sides of which are decorated with the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, a human figure armed with a weapon, a warrior(?) armed with sword and shield fighting a dragon, a fight scene between two centaurs; the round base is squat and has mouldings at the upper end. The entry for this church in Svenska kyrkan [www.svenskakyrkan.se/savare/harjevad-kyrka] [accessed 28 February 2020] notes that the old font was made by master Othelric, who made the fonts at Härjevad, Hornborga, Norra Härene, Öttum, Skeby, Västerplana and the church of Skälvum, and is decorated with the Baptism of Christ as well as scenes of the fight between Good and Evil. [NB: the Museum's web page for this church [http://vastergotlandsmuseum.se/fornbyn/harjevads-gamla-kyrka/] [accessed 28 February 2020] informs that the baptismal font inside the moved old church was actually rescued from the gardens in Stora Bjurum, which was a medieval manor house].
