Baptismal font from ca. 1200 in the 8th-century baptistery. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908: 26 and ill. on p. 27): the 'tank', "cut out of a solid block of the local marble, is no less that 31 feet in circumference; it is probably of the period when the baptistery was rebuilt, 1122-1135"; like the 'tanks' at Parma and at the baptistery of the Orthodox at Ravenna, the tank at Verona has also "a kind of stone pulpit [...], the object of which" suggests Bond (ibid.) "may be to protect the vestments of the bishop from being splashed". Unlike the other two 'pulpits', the one in the Verona tank is in the centre of it; Bond (ibid.) suggests rather awkwardly, that "perhaps a plank was put across to it in order to allow the officiating priest to get inside it." Nordström (1984) describes the presence of scenes of the Baptism of Christ, Annunciation, Nativity, First Bath, King Herod ordering the Massacre, Massacre of the Innocents, Adoration of the Shepherds, Adoration of the Magi, on the sides of the octagonal font [the insert in the basin well is quatrefoil]; he dates the font to the last quarter of the 12th century or circa 1200. The sides of the basin are ornamented with a six-arch frame resting on only two columns -one at each corner of the octagonal basin; the columns are ornamented with spiral torsade or chevron motif. Basin side scenes [order may not be sequential]: 1)Baptism of Christ in the Jordan in the presence of two angels; 2)Annunciation: Gabriel holds a lily and extends a hand towards a haloed Mary who in front of throne; several figures (female?) stand on both sides of the scene with courtains behind them; 3)Nativity, 4)Jesus' first bath and 5)Visitation are conflated on one single panel; 6)Flight to Egypy; 7)Herod orders the Massacre of the Innocents; 8)Herod's troops carry out the Massacre of the Innocents; 9)Adoration of the Shepherds; 10)Adoration of the Magi -- The marble font is dated elsewhere to ca. 1200. There is a red stone quatrefoil inner basin inside the larger octagonal font, and a round bronze basin inside the latter. [to be completed] -- [We are grateful to Juan Antonio Olañeta, of www.claustro.com, for the photographs of this font]
