Described and illustrated in Sancho Campo (1971), who attributes to the 'maestro de San Isidoro' [NB: the illustration in v.I: pl. 47 is labelled "Renedo de la Vega", but it represents the font at Renedo de Valdavia]. In García Guinea (1990) and (1998), where it is dated -however reluctantly [="con grandes dudas"]- to the late 12th century; in Bilbao (1996). Romanesque baptismal font of the 12th century. Bilbao (ibid.) gives the fonts at Cillamayor and Valdeande, also in Burgos, as having the scene of the consecration of the font/waters [NB: for a superb Italian example cf. Index entry for Vicofertile]. On-site notes (1887, 1999): bucket-shaped font mounted on a square base, dated a/p the sources; the basin is ornamented at the upper rim with a band of beautiful encircled rosettes; the basin sides are ornamented with an arcade with foliage motifs in the spandrels; the round arches house a number of scenes and figures: a squence of arches portrays (L->R) the Adoration of the Magi, two mounted Magi, each in his own arch, then the third Magus dismounts on the next arch, while the next arch contains the Madonna and Child; the arch to the right of that, whose content also appears to form part of this scene, has a soldier (?) facing left, one hand on the column which separates the two arches while the other hand holds a weapon (?); the next two arches contain a man and a woman, each with hands together in prayer; the following arch holds Samson fighting the lion; the next shows a priest blessing (?) a baptismal font (or its water); the next has a warrior (St. George?) fighting a dragon; the basin rests on a large ring and a square lower base which has a claw motif at each angle; the Maltese cross appears on the shield, on the necklace of the Madonna, and several other places here. This font is reported to have been earlier at the Augustinian monastery of Arenillas de San Pelayo. Lid hinge staples are still evident in the upper rim . Noted and illustrated, with date in the late 12th century, in Martín Jiménez (2008).
