Schiller (1971) writes: "The reliefs on the twelfth-century font at Altenstadt co-ordinate the Baptism of Christ, the Virgin, and St. Michael combating the dragon." The font is quatrefoil-shaped, inside and out; there are scenes on the main sides: the baptism of Christ, St Michael fighting the dragon, and the Evangelists' symbols in the lower spandrels. [NB: the quatrefoiled shape of the basin suggests a later date than attributed by Schiller]
